Obituary Hammie Conyers Montgomery, son of the late Florine and Conyers Montgomery, was born in St. Charles, S.C. on August 3, 1939 and departed his life on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S. C. Hammie received his education in the Darlington County Public Schools and graduated as a member of the Butler High School's Class of 1957. After graduation, he matriculated to Denmark Branch Trade School, Denmark, S. C., where he received a degree in tailoring. He later moved to Washington, D. C. and enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the US Army Quarter Master Corps and was honorable discharged in 1964. Upon returning to Washington, he was employed at the U. S. Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head, MD for 29 years for which he worked until his retirement. In addition, he worked as a part-time orderly at the Greater Southeast Hospital. He was united in marriage on May 5, 1970 to Margaret Davis of Indian Head Maryland. From this union he was blessed with two daughters, LaVeita and Lisa. Hammie relocated back to Hartsville after his retirement in 1993 and immediately became active within the community. He was a man who was very concerned about the needs and welfare of others. He was always available to lend a helping hand. He was a keen businessman and was constantly involved in some type of business endeavor. Hammie was instrumental in establishing the Butler High School Alumnae Chapter of Washington, D.C. from which many other alumnae chapters sprung. He enjoyed cooking, farming, landscaping and raising animals. He was an avid photographer and one could see him taking photographs of numerous city and local events. Hammie had a great appreciation of music and the arts. It was never a surprise to see him as a "DJ" with "Monty's NightFlight", dancing a cool swing on the dance floor, or having someone change one of his latest photos into a beautiful portrait. Those surviving to cherish the loving memory of Hammie Montgomery are his wife, Margaret Montgomery of Indian Head, MD; two daughters; LaVeita Sadena (Troy) Johnson of Finksburg, MD; and Lisa Yvonne Montgomery of Apopka, FLA; four sisters: Corine M. Ervin of Columbia, SC, Georgia M. (John) Pearson of Suitland, MD, Mary Alice (Bernice) Wilson and Jacqueline Moore of Hartsville, SC; one sister-in-law, Brenda Montgomery of Hartville, SC; one brother-in-law, Harold "Jimmy" Simmons of Washington, DC; three grandchildren: Kristen, Troy and Kendal Johnson; a host of nephews and nieces; two special close friends, Lendell Robinson and Calvin Henson; and many other loving relatives and dear friends.
