Obituary Minnie Ophelia Washington Bee was born on August 6, 1939 in Lee County, South Carolina. She departed this life on October 30, 2013 after an illness. She was affectionately known as "Kitty" to her family. She was the daughter of the late Richard Washington Sr. and Mozelle Roderick Washington. She was the third of seven children. She was brought up in a Christian home. She attended Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church after retiring to her home and until her illness wouldn't allow her to. She was educated in South Carolina and graduated from Spaulding High School. After graduation, she moved to New York City. She was a Sunday school teacher at the Church of the Open Door. She was employed as a glass designer. In 1959, she met Robert J. Bee. She was married to Robert on March 25, 1961. To this union, three daughters were born: Natalie Selena Bee, Allison Lucretia Bee, and Devunia Marcella Bee. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Marymount Manhattan College. She also received her Master's Degree in Education from Adelphi University. She was employed by the New York City Board of Education from 1968 - 2002. She was a teacher, parent/reading coordinator, and an administrator. She was an active member of Greater Central Baptist Church in New York City for 42 years. She served as a Missionary and Sunday School Teacher. After her retirement in 2003, she and Robert relocated to Lee County, SC where she built a home on the family property around the area she grew up in. She lived there until her passing. She joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Darlington until she was no longer able to attend, due to health reasons. She attended Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church, which was closer to the home, when her health allowed. She was predeceased by her parents and five brothers: Richard, James, Eugene, Stanley and William Washington (Irene); and two brother-in-laws: Terry Bee and Herman Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Robert J. Bee of the home. Her three daughters: Natalie S. Bee (Florence, SC), Allison L. Bee (Bronx, NY) and Devunia M. Bee (of the home); her grandchildren: Michael A. (Jennifer) Bee and Kimiko Bee-Hollis (Bronx, NY) and Shalisha, Amanda Ophelia, Eric Kenyon, and Anani Bee-Poole (of the home); Twyla Whitehead (Kileen, TX) and Dijuan Hull (NYC). There are five great-grandchildren, Julia A. and Cailyn Minnie Bee (Bronx, NY), Jeffery McGuire and Tyke Whitehead Jr. (Kileen, TX) and Nevaeh Hull (NYC). Two siblings: Harold (Rose) Washington, Barbara Williams of Marion, SC, and 7 sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Washington (New York City), Gloria Washington (Lamar, SC); Mary Iris Washington (Atlanta, GA); Alice Cason, (Burton, SC); Alberta Bee (Beaufort, SC); Sally (Anthony) Wilson (Dallas, TX); Felicia Bee (Beaufort, SC); 5 brothers-in-laws: Eddie Bee (SC); George Bee (MD); Herbert Green (MD); Charlie Bee (Dallas, TX); and Tim Bee (Dallas, TX). Two goddaughters: Sharri (Lauren/Christopher Arnold) (Laurel, MD); Tonya Mays (New York), and one godson Christopher (Saija/James) Washington (Greensboro, NC). Her very close friends include Mary Coleman, Camille Aromando, and Mary Mays all of New York. This also includes a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
